“단 하나의 몸짓이 감각과 사고, 삶의 방식을 바꾼다”는 믿음은 그의 모든 작업을 관통하는 출발점이며, 무용을 단순한 표현 양식이 아니라 인간이 세계와 관계 맺는 방식을 다시 질문하는 수행적 예술로 정의한다.
오늘날 인간은 기술과 시스템 속에서 점점 더 효율적으로 기능하지만, 동시에 몸과 감각, 자연과의 관계로부터 멀어지고 있다. 김호연의 작업은 이 분리의 상태를 핵심 문제로 삼는다. 그는 몸을 인간과 세계가 다시 연결되는 감각의 장소이자 관계의 매개로 재인식하며, 관객과 참여자가 자신의 감각을 통해 ‘스스로 발견’하도록 만드는 경험의 장을 설계한다. 그의 예술은 해답을 제시하기보다 질문을 생성하는 방식으로 작동하며, 감상은 전달받는 것이 아니라 몸으로 획득되는 과정이 된다.

Artist Statement | Kim Ho-yeon
Kim Ho-yeon is an artist who explores and expands human sensibility through the body in an age defined by technology and efficiency.
The belief that “a single gesture can transform perception, thought, and ways of living” serves as the foundation of his practice. He understands dance not merely as a mode of expression, but as a performative art that reconsiders how humans relate to the world.
In contemporary society, humans increasingly function efficiently within technological systems, while becoming progressively disconnected from the body, sensory experience, and nature. Kim Ho-yeon’s work addresses this condition of separation as its central concern. He repositions the body as a sensory site where humans and the world can reconnect, designing experiential environments in which audiences and participants are invited to discover meaning through their own embodied perception. Rather than offering answers, his work generates questions—where perception is not delivered, but acquired through bodily experience.
His inquiry has continuously expanded toward the relational dynamics between humans and nature. In his work, nature is neither a backdrop nor a theme, but a relational presence that is constantly negotiated through human sensibility and attitude. Rather than framing ecology as a moral message or ideological statement, he translates it into a lived, embodied problem—experienced through bodily sensation and choice. Through this approach, Kim Ho-yeon persistently reexamines the relationships among humans, environment, and community at the level of the body. These concerns are translated across theater performances, dance films, site-responsive and participatory works, as well as creative education and community-based programs. For him, a single artwork is not a finalized outcome, but part of a structure in which one question is continually reinterpreted and transformed across different media and contexts.
The Green Dance project exemplifies this performative approach and encapsulates his artistic universe. Rather than functioning as environmental activism or a campaign, the project operates as a bodily practice aimed at restoring human sensibility. Through walking, movement, and direct contact with natural environments, participants are guided to become aware of their physical condition and attitudes toward living. This ongoing project examines how art can function as a practice that transforms everyday perception and relational awareness.
His practice has gained concrete extensibility through international collaboration and public engagement. Kim Ho-yeon is recognized as a rare Korean choreographer who participated in the Canada National Arts Centre (NAC)’s CAPSULE series—an initiative primarily dedicated to Canadian artists—through an international co-production format, and as one of the very few cases in which a Korean contemporary dance choreographer-led work was officially selected by one of the most prestigious screen dance festivals in the United States. These experiences substantiate his ability to connect performance, screen-based work, research, education, and public projects through a coherent artistic language.
Rather than positioning himself as a specialist confined to a single discipline, Kim Ho-yeon operates as an artist who connects performance, moving image, education, and public practice through the body. By initiating and directing creation-based education and community programs, he has developed platforms in which the artistic process itself becomes a shared social experience. Moving forward, he continues to ask whether the body can remain an active agent of perception, choice, and relational engagement within a society governed by efficiency and technological logic. His practice connects choreography, moving image, public art, and artistic research through movement as an embodied form of practice.
Working across diverse creative contexts, including international collaborations and public art projects, he has also initiated and led creation-based arts education and community programs.
Through sustained practice, he expands choreography as a tool for rethinking the body in relation to society, environment, and lived experience.
